Bringing retro back: Davines x mitch. studio disco

If there’s one thing we love here at Coral & Co. Events, it’s a brief that is unique, bold and a little bit sassy. That’s exactly what we got when we teamed up with Davines to help them launch a new hair product with our signature styling at mitch. Salon.

With a funky brief that was all about disco, hits of 80’s nostalgia and feminine touches with a vibrant and cool edge, our minds instantly started ticking with endless possibilities to bring this launch to life.

But before we get into the details (our favourite part) let’s take it back to the beginning.

FRIENDS IN EVENT STYLING

Our friends in event styling who are based in Sydney came to us, seeking a local Melbourne event agency to ensure the event they had been trusted with exceeded expectations. Élysée Collective are known for putting together events that ooze chic accents and memorable displays of decor, and have worked with reputable brands such as Pallas Couture. Talk about our vibe.

With the event set to take place at mitch. Studio in Ashburton, we were the dream team for the job, with extensive experience planning premium and elevated events in and around Melbourne, with a digital Rolodex of suppliers at the ready who would ensure we delivered an event worth talking about.

THE CLIENT

Davines – a sustainable and luxury hair brand – was ready to launch their new product, the Instant Bonding Glow, as part of the ‘Heart of Glass’ collection.

If you’re not familiar with this iconic 80’s song of the same name – we’ll have to give you a little musical history lesson, as it does give away the entire aesthetic and theme of the launch event.

‘Heart of Glass’ is a hit song by 80’s icon Blondie – a name perfectly fitting for the range of hair care specifically formulated for blonde locks. Drawing from the range name and hero product of the night, the theme was intended to bring a hit of nostalgia and disco to mitch. Studio.

Spoiler alert: we nailed it.

THE BRIEF

Disco. Popping hues. Playful decor. Nostalgia. Retro. Blue. Yellow. Orange. Green.

With a clear direction from our friends at Élysée Collective, we were able to jump head-first into the concepts and planning for this product launch. From custom decals and a hearty dose of flower power, plus an epic photographer, delicious cocktails, canapes and sustainable stationary – we were ready to bring the Coral & Co. disco balls. Literally.

WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT

Before we called our friends in the biz, we took a look at what we had to work with. Sometimes in this business, we are given a blank canvas, or something a little… bland. That was not the case with this event.

mitch. studio is one of those spaces where you are wowed upon entry. With neon yellow acrylic features and a yellow-tiled front desk (which we swiftly turned into a DJ booth) this was a perfect backdrop for our ideas.

All we had to do was find the details that would not only stand out on their own but also accentuate the epic colourful points throughout the salon.

FLOWER POWER

No event of ours is complete without standout florals. They are the glue to any signature styling, with endless possibilities of colourways, shapes and sizes. Our friends from Emily and Rose Studios delivered an impressive injection of iconic, popping florals that were visible at every touch point and photo op, from the dance floor to the media wall.

Colourful flower decals cascaded up stairwells and down the mirrors, and the orange, blue, yellow and greens were picture-perfect, featured at the bar, entry and product shelves. Take this explosion of flower power mixed in with our previously mentioned collection of disco balls, and you’ve got a match made in 80’s heaven.

DEVIL IN THE DETAILS

Never doing things by halves, the event was filled with dainty details everywhere you turned – if you looked hard enough 😉

Elle Creative provided signage and focal points to highlight the product of the evening, as well as to spruce up the offerings around the space.

With guests encouraged to enjoy ‘Bites and Blow Outs’ and ‘Happy Hair Hour’ this clever wording kept the vibe fun and edgy. While guests grazed on nibbles or sat for an express styling service, they were surrounded by cheeky hints of retro decor, encouraging many a happy snap on Insta.

To keep in line with the sustainable ethos and mission of both Davines and mitch. Studio, the details and signage were created on bright popping paper stock to ensure there was zero plastic waste.

Happy Hour Cocktail was on hand to provide the glamorous guest list with tasty cocktails, including Cosmo’s that no one would stop raving about. Club Sup provided the delicious catering, while Brunetti sealed the deal with a cannoli tower that we are still thinking about.

STRIKE A POSE

What’s a great event without a photographer to capture the magic?

In keeping with the retro feel, talented Nicole Squelch took us back to the 80’s with a mix of hard flash photography and black-and-white edits, to create images that look like something from a different era altogether.

It wasn’t all flash photography though. When events look this good, we don’t blame the guests for snapping away on socials, sharing details from flowers to food, and of course, to the actual product itself.

THE INFLUENCER GUESTLIST

We were beyond thrilled to welcome some seriously fabulous faces to our Davines X mitch. studio Disco. event. From Emma Gurr, the creative force behind Beverly Rooftop, to Lucy Feagins, the visionary director of The Design Files, our guestlist was bursting with talent and style. Not to mention the likes of Kelly Thompson, Charlotte Hamilton, and makeup maven Amelia O’Brien, each bringing their own touch of magic to the evening. Their presence added an extra layer of sparkle to an already unforgettable night.

Yet another notch in our Coral & Co. belt, this was one of our favourite experiences to date. Working closely with brands and PR companies is what ignites our creative spark as we seamlessly collaborate with multiple personalities and visions to create an event that embodies our mission: Pinterest-worthy parties for those who appreciate the finer details.

We take the stress away from busy professionals who need to throw an event that wows, taking over the logistics, on-the-day bump-in, and details big and small. This way, you can focus on contacting that curated guest list, dealing with RSVPs, and finding yourself a killer outfit, of course.

Whether it’s a product launch like Davines Instant Bonding Glow, a company launch like The Creative Directory or a styling session, we know how to work to your brief, inject our unique vision and create an experience that goes above and beyond, doused in luxury, sophistication, and of course – a little bit of sass.

Until next time,

Coral & Co. x
